There’s this image of the Crystal Charity Ball members that they’re hifalutin types who fret over the proper wording on invitations and have never, ever worn a pair slacks, let alone jeans.
To be very honest there’s an understandable reason. They raise millions of dollars at a one-night-only ball for children and they also hold a luncheon presenting the 10 Best Dressed of Dallas.
But in reality they’re just like most folks in North Texas. They wait in the pick-up line at elementary schools. They pick up after their husbands. Some read real books and others swear by ebooks. And, yes, they do have a sense of humor.
Need proof? Well, 2014 Chair Robyn Conlon decided that since the troops were to gather at the Hilton Anatole on Thursday, December 4, to start schlepping auction items, stringing beads and generally just being lackeys, they would have the 1st Ever Tacky Christmas Sweater Lunch complete with Chick-fil-A and killer cupcakes. After all, they were way ahead of schedule in preparing for the Saturday fundraiser.
Perhaps the inspiration was the overly pregnant CCB Publications Coordinator Kelsey Turner. Not only was Kelsey due to deliver at any moment*, but her husband Jeremy was running the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop.
Regardless, it was ironic that the ladies who put on the 10 Best Dressed were now boasting the ugly side of holiday sweaters. Sorry, but the sweaters weren’t as ugly, as they were just downright embarrassing.
A couple of the standouts were
- Kristina Whitcomb wore her mother’s vintage sweater with a life-size Santa on the back, whose beard looked like a bushel of shredded coconut
- Ann Dyer in a T-shirt that made Kim Kardashian look downright anorexic. The cute candy cane of the derrière was a sweet touch.
- Vicki Chapman’s had read-and-white mitts sewn on her sweater for pockets
- Buds Tanya Foster and Alicia Wood did a glam Grinch with Santa caps and red-and-green glittery garlands of tinsel wrapped around their necks
- Patty Leyendecker’s and Angie Kadesky’s sweaters featured rows of reindeer
- Cindy Ethel red-and-white sweater had nattily attired penguins
-
Heather Furniss had a whole Christmas scene on her sweater complete with an enormous Christmas tree decorated with bows and balls on the front and a little girl decorating a fireplace on the back
- Lisa Longino opted for a black vest with nattily decked out snowmen
- Libby Allred’s black sweater trimmed in red with red button were highlighted by all types of socks
- Another black sweater was worn by Mary Gill with prints of poinsettias springing up
- Elizabeth Gambrell went for a purple sweater with a three-dimensional, cuddly sheep
- Robyn accessorized her Santa sweater with red-and-green lights on a necklace with matching party hat
All too soon the ladies on a Sprinkle cupcake sugar high got back to preparing for the big party just two days away.
One insider admitted, “We’re so far ahead of schedule that Suzy Gekiere is counting the number of cocktail napkins for each of the bars.”
Told you these gals are on top of things.
